Brief Profile of the Department
The Directorate of Distance Education was established in 1996 to impart higher education through the distance mode with multi-media approach. As non-formal, supplementary mode of education, distance education differs from the conventional formal system in the objective to reach the unreached, to include the excluded. Tripura University has consistently promoted Distance Education on approved UGC and Distance Education Council, New Delhi guidelines to cater to the needs of – 1. Students who discontinued their formal education owing to pecuniary and other circumstances. 2. Students living in geographically remote areas. 3. Students who discontinued their education because of lack of aptitude and motivation but later on became motivated. 4. In-service persons, housewives, etc. At present, there are more than 3690 students studying under this Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), which is by itself indicative of the popularity and reliability of the Directorate of Distance Education, Tripura University, among the common mass in general, as well as among students in particular of the State.
